Playing in the Yard

Been awhile since I updated this website, but that doesn’t mean it’s been all that much of awhile since I played with the camera.

Today, I sat out in the backyard for awhile, playing “Hummingbird Hunter (Extraordinaire).” The only thing I regret is that I couldn’t focus fast enough for the hummer that flew right up to the camera to check it out!

iPad Light Experiment

Tuvia Matai Bobalah is one of my favorite subjects to shoot. Last night, spotting him in a completely dark bedroom — you really could barely see him — I got the idea to try to use my iPad as a lighting source. After emailing the example to Bob Marcotte, he responded with news that there was an iPad Softbox app. I didn’t download the one he suggested, but saw a different one I liked. The image here was shot by putting a solid orange pattern on the iPad and positioning it about 2-3 feet to the right. Lens: 24-70 f2.8/L at 70 mm, f2.8, 0.6 sec, handheld. Some Photoshop work using filters to deal with noise.

Recently, I was able to borrow a Canon 300 mm 2.8/L lens from a friend. I’m hoping to be able to trade something so as to add it to my permanent collection.

Bunny Chafowitz — a.k.a., the LOML — has a hobby of her own. Hers involves making our yard look absolutely beautiful.

Although the yard itself is large, playing with a 300 mm lens in it makes it appear small.

The Crane was shot against the backdrop of our “back 40,” so to speak, near an area Bunny has appropriately named “Idlewyld.” Opened up to the full 2.8 aperture, the trees and shrubs a mere 10-15 feet behind it fade into a beautifully-amorphous green.

In keeping with my recent promise to myself to try to enjoy life a little more and particularly to get back to photography, I’ll be posting photos more regularly, even if I have to go back to things I’ve shot in the past on any particular day because I didn’t shoot.

This photo was done in 2009 when my friend, anthropology professor Hank Delcore, invited me to a day at the races at the Fresno Fairgrounds.

I’m going through the shots taken that day and when I post the full-album, you’ll be able to find it on the Albums page.

Papillion Tuvia Matai Bobalah

A few years back, we “rescued” a papillion-mutt mix from a friend who could no longer keep him. VERY shortly thereafter, our dalmatian, Challah Bobalah, had to be put down due to lower limb paralysis. Bunny Chafowitz decided we needed another papillion. Thus came Tuvia Matai Bobalah into our lives.

The Dolphins Leap Tonight

A we got wet, a we got wet.

In the fountain, the spouting fountain,
The dolphins leap tonight.

There’s no fooling some people. This image was one of the very first night images I attempted after buying photographer Bob Marcotte’s Canon 5D. I laid down on the ground, shooting upwards, to catch the moon in a vain hope that I’d later fool Bunny Chafowitz into thinking that I’d managed to photograph dolphins leaping out of the water over my head. When I showed it to her, she was not impressed. Not even a little bit.

“You cut off most of the fountain,” she said.
