I bought myself a new camera lens the day before yesterday. It’s a lens I’ve been drooling over; wanting to own for at least as long as I’ve known about its existence over a year ago. I finally bit the bullet, so to speak, and bought it.

The lens is a Canon 85 mm f1.2 L-series USM II.

The reason I wanted it is the ability to shoot in incredibly low light with natural light — my preferred mode — and get an incredibly shallow depth of field.

The fountain here was photographed on the patio of a restaurant, at night, without any additional lighting. The span between water spouts is approximately 2 inches. Notice also the blurring of the highlights on the water.

Beautiful!

Can’t wait to try it on people!

A we got wet, a we got wet.

In the fountain, the spouting fountain,
The dolphins leap tonight.

There’s no fooling some people. This image was one of the very first night images I attempted after buying photographer Bob Marcotte’s Canon 5D. I laid down on the ground, shooting upwards, to catch the moon in a vain hope that I’d later fool Bunny Chafowitz into thinking that I’d managed to photograph dolphins leaping out of the water over my head. When I showed it to her, she was not impressed. Not even a little bit.

“You cut off most of the fountain,” she said.
